How does hiring a skip work?
Before you hire a skip, you’ll need to think about a few common questions:
- Do I need a skip hire permit?
- Where can I place my skip?
- What size skip do I need?
- How long do I need my skip for?
- What can I put in my skip?
We supply three sizes of skips: 8, 12 and 14 cubic yards. That’s equivalent to about 80, 120 and 140 standard black bin bags’ worth of rubbish.
Your skip can be placed on private property (e.g. a driveway) if available, or on the public highway with permission from the local council.
If you want to place your skip on the public highway (i.e. the roadside) you’ll need to apply for a skip permit in advance and pay the appropriate fee.
How to hire a skip
Once you know what size skip you need, where it is going and when you need it, you can book a skip delivery from your skip hire provider.
It’s a good idea to speak to your skip provider first, as the availability of the skip might affect some of the details you put on your skip permit application.
In some London boroughs, you cannot apply directly to the council for a skip licence, so your skip hire provider will need to apply on your behalf.
How long can you keep a skip for?
Again, if your skip is going on the roadside, how long you can hire a skip for depends on the expiration date on your skip licence.
This is typically 14 days, and different boroughs have different rules about whether or not you can extend a skip permit for a further 14 days, and whether you pay a full or reduced application fee for doing so.
In general, if you can’t fill a skip in 14 days, you probably don’t need to keep it for longer. It’s better to have your rubbish ready, fill your skip as fast as possible, and arrange to have it collected well within your permitted time.
